| Baltiysky Zavod has entered the world market in the field of civil shipbuilding. In order to increase competitiveness and reduce costs Baltiysky Zavod started modernisation of its facilities. Program of modernisation includes as follows:
- metal cutting – up to 60.000 t per year
- use of large-sized plates (3.2 х 12 m);
- reduction of man-hours in the Hull and Pipe shops in 2-3 times.
Stage 1
In 2003-2004 a Steel Cutting shop with the covered storage area was put in operation. The design capacity of the shop is 60.000 tones of steel and hull structures annually. The shop is fitted out with the following automated equipment:
- plate/profile transporting system
- Gutmann shot-blasting and preservation line (Germany)
- Famak (Poland) and IMG (Germany) cranes
- IMG profile cutting line
- Messer Cutting & Welding plate cutting machines (Germany)
The new shop makes it possible to increase output in 3 times, improve working conditions and reduce harmful effect on the environment.
Stage 2
Construction of a new painting shop with the aim to meet the recent requirements as to painting of ships. The following facilities should be modernised during the normal operation of the shipyard:
- module assembly shop. It should be equipped with overhead cranes and sliding roof that will allow to carry out the main scope of assembly/ welding work indoors.
- Slipway A. It should be equipped with a 900-ton gantry crane that will allow to reduce the construction period of large civil and navy ships.
Stage 3
Construction of a two-bay covered slipway with dock, pipe shop, assembly areas and ancillary services. The two-bay covered slipway (240 m long, 54 m each bay wide) equipped with 160-ton cranes (crane track height – 40 m) will make it possible to build hulls of large outfitted blocks on a horizontal site.
The covered slipway will allow to build indoors naval ships of the 1st and the 2nd class and civil ships out of large outfitted blocks, achieving maximum completeness of a ship before the launching.
